Get all the materials together and have a plan of action how to do it on your own, independently, so you are showing him that you are responsible for doing this on your own. By showing him your maturity in taking this on by yourself, he will probably be more willing to allow you to do it. Plus, if you've already bought materials, it'll make it harder for him to say no!
